AI as Collaborator, Not Oracle
The best AI sessions feel like working with a senior dev who occasionally makes stuff up. The trick is knowing when to push back.
Here's a thing I've learned: AI is confident even when it's wrong.
Last week, I asked Claude to help optimize a component. It suggested a pattern that sounded great - clean, elegant, performant.
I implemented it. Immediately broke the build.
Turned out the solution was for a different version of React. Claude hallucinated a feature that didn't exist yet.
The Trap
When you're new to coding, AI confidence is dangerous. If Claude says "This is the right approach," you assume it knows better than you.
Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.
The trick is: Treat AI like a confident junior developer, not a senior architect.
What Works
Here's how I think about it now:
AI is great at:
- Generating boilerplate fast
- Explaining concepts clearly
- Suggesting approaches I wouldn't think of
- Debugging syntax errors
AI is bad at:
- Knowing your specific constraints
- Understanding context it hasn't seen
- Admitting when it's guessing
- Catching logic errors in complex systems
I'm responsible for:
- Defining the problem clearly
- Sanity-checking solutions
- Testing before trusting
- Pushing back when something feels wrong
The "Does This Make Sense?" Test
Now, before I implement anything AI suggests, I ask myself:
- Do I understand what this code does?
- Does it align with patterns I've seen work before?
- If this breaks, could I debug it?
If the answer to any of those is "no," I don't ship it. I ask follow-up questions until I get it.
Why This Matters
AI lets you build faster than traditional learning. But speed without understanding is brittle.
The goal isn't "AI writes code, I deploy it." The goal is: "AI accelerates what I understand well enough to validate."
That's the difference between using AI as a crutch and using it as a collaborator.
The Mindset Shift
When I started, I treated AI like an oracle. If it said something, I assumed it was right.
Now I treat it like a sparring partner. It throws ideas at me. I test them. Sometimes they're brilliant. Sometimes they're nonsense.
But the conversation makes me sharper.
That's the real value: Not that AI writes perfect code. That it forces me to think critically about what I'm building and why.
And when it's wrong? I learn more from debugging its mistakes than I would from following a perfect tutorial.
That's collaboration.
